BREAKING NEWS!: CITIZEN SELF-DEFENSE GROUPS EMERGE IN THE MAYAN COMMUNITY OF CHUNHUHUB, QUINTANA ROO!
Indignation of the villagers of Chunhuhub -ubicated in the Mayan region of Quintana Roo, México- is so enormous before the exponential increasing of robbers and extortions in their town, for this they have decided in a general assembly to create the “Grupos de Vigilancia” (Selfdefenses Groups) to substitute the “labor” (between quotation marks, due its inefficiency and invalidity) of municipal police, that in voice of the inhabitants “it is better they remove their uniforms and leave here (…) there are only between 4 to 5 police elements and when there have been assaults in these last weeks they never reach to the crime scene”.
“When there are assaults in broad daylight, the Mayor asks for help of the police authorities of Morelos -capital of the neighboring municipality about 15 kilometers from Chunhuhub- but they never attend the crimes and they always arrive but from Felipe Carrillo municipality who is much further away”, says one of the neighbors who has joined the selfdefenses group.
Of the orality recovered with the people, it talk about the assaults on private homes and businesses establishments have increased, adding to this the concern of the families of young students assaulted after school hours.
In short, the initiative of the citizen self-defense in Chunhuhub landed on the practice because “the crime is so everyday that no one is safe … unless we put a stop.”
