Positioning and analysis on the Case Of “Lxs 5 de Narvarte”: On justice & internationalism

“There is nothing more discouraging than a satisfied slave,” Ricardo Flores Magon.

Why Were Ruben Espinosa & Nadia Vera So Uncomfortable?

Rubén Becerril Espinosa and Nadia Vera were surveilled for years with the most sophisticated spy mechanisms activated by the Mexican state. Since September 1st, 2012, after the electoral scam of that year, the take of public and transport centers were protest activities in all of Mexican cities, in 2013 the teachers’ struggle and several working sectors movements against structural reforms were made public, in 2014 the world turned to see the Mexican Republic after the disappearance of 43 student teachers (“normalistas”) in the state of Guerrero and the painful June 5th, 2015, the day on which 8 young students from the Veracruz University (Universidad Veracruzana) were reprimanded at home and tortured in a brutal way. In all of these struggles both of them were present, one behind the camera lenses and the pen, the other in earnest militancy.

Veracruz has a black history in the exercise of journalism, and that is because since 2000 this state has been ruled by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (“PRI”) in collusion with the organized crime, where the practice of journalism is terribly punished with death threats, disappearances or murderers; to cover any type of anti-government protest, drug trafficking activity or the discovery of new mass graves, are minus points for the “legitimation” of Fidel Herrera’s or Javier Duarte’s mandates.

The figures speak for themselves: Noel Lopez Olguin, a reporter for Noticias de Acayucan, March 2011, Miguel Angel Lopez Velasco, a columnist for Notiver, June 2011. Misael López Solana, a photographer for Notiver, June 2011. Yolanda Ordaz de la Cruz, a reporter for Notiver, July 2011. Regina Martínez Pérez, a correspondent for Proceso, April 2012. Hugo Gabriel Cordova, a photographer for Notiver, May 2012. Guillermo Luna Varela, photographer  for Veracruznews, May 2012. Esteban Rodríguez Rodríguez, photographer for AZ, May 2012. Victor Manuel Baez, editor for Reporteros Policiacos, June 2012. Gregorio Jimenez de la Cruz, photographer for Notisur, February 2014. Moisés Sánchez, director of La Unión, January 2015. Armando Saldaña, commentator for La Ke Buena, May 2015. Juan Mendoza Delgado, director of Escribiendo la Verdad, July 2015. Together with Rubén, 14 JOURNALISTS KILLED IN 4 YEARS!

Rubén Espinosa took two photographs that became viral and that bothered the governor. One of them was used as the cover story for the Proceso magazine, there was even an order from him to purchase all of the magazines and newspapers with this picture since it displayed him as a tyrant and as a parapoliceman (“parapolicía”), showing as well his advanced obesity. The picture bothered Javier Duarte so much that took Comrade Rubén’s life. Another one of these pictures was distributed by the Cuartoscuro photography agency.

From this, he received many death threats through digital media, which developed in him an early paranoia and he had to “self-exile” in Mexico City. Along with Nadia’s activism and presence in each social mobilization, the state as a whole sought the right to try to sow (as always) totally reprehensible and distorted versions in this murder, at the same time Mexico City’s Attorney General (“PGJDF”) that put as a basis the nationality of one of the murdered (Mile Virginia Martin) and an alleged “party” that would end in tragedy; those bureaucrats should be ceased! Hand in hand, mass media such as La Razón and Reforma have seconded these “theories” without even naming the constant death threats that Nadia and Ruben suffered. It is also necessary to clarify that neither Art. 19 (independent organization for the surveillance of human rights) nor the Mexican Human Rights Commission have made the case any easier, being an obtuse way of extending the legal proceedings, these people are at the mercy of creating obstacles to openly disclose the truth in cases like this one.

Now, with so many hesitations of these legal institutions, the case has spread across the world as a “journalist assassination”, to which we clarify that although Rubén had suffered harassment since a long time. It was state terrorism which killed 5 people! All of them from the proletarian class!

It is noteworthy that in the various protests that have taken place outside the building of the Narvarte borough, neighbors and workers said that between Friday July 31st and Saturday August 8, many patrols and people with dubious appearance have roamed the area. Some neighbors themselves confirmed that they were treated with verbal and psychological violence when approached by these mercenaries, ruling out that this would respond to a homicide since the entrance to the building is difficult to access, where there is a policeman guarding and only access is allowed by intercom, this should be known. THE STATE ORCHESTRATED THE ATTACK WITH CRIME PROFESSIONALS!

Testimonials clarify it was more than evident the use of gun silencers and clamps to avoid the noise resulting from the torture and “coup de grace” that were direct proofs and were confirmed by Rubén’s family, the alleged leak photographs by the PGJDF don’t show the actual damages.

The Protest is the Beginning: the Problem is the State

It is painful when a comrade falls, but more stifling is the humiliation in which it is sought to make those who reject the submission and existing reality, our fighter class against a life of slavery. But enough talk! It is time for collective action to overcome the organizational model always used, otherwise, the blood will continue running…

Rubén Espinosa was well aware that the Mexican State was responsible for all the crimes he had to document, but especially those against journalists, and that its defeat would not be an elegant and peaceful one, radical measures were necessary. In an interview on April 28 he stated: “(…) if one of my friends and family would break a window or a wall, this would be nearly useless, more radical measures are needed.”

An analysis regarding the direction of anger from the past murders of journalists must continue, since the demonstration-rally-memorial-concentration model must be overcome and thrown overboard, because although governors’ pawns are imprisoned or lose their political positions, the Mexican people are still capable of being victimized by the simple fact that when a state exists in the conditions in which Mexico does, the war against the innocent becomes inevitable.

Now, we are part of the Movimiento de Acción Por Lxs 5 de Narvarte, a social movement group between organized journalists, residents of the Colonia Narvarte, free media co-ops and libertarian organizations, seeking to develop anti-statist forms of organization in response to the most recent assaults against Mexican society, but also to continue the mass communication of the murder of each of our colleagues killed on July 31.

To develop a non-state libertarian thought and ways of organizing! because only living in a territory where the path of life is shared and we fight together for common causes the murderers will not be allowed.

Those who want to continue watching disappearances, murders and what they call “social crime” on TV because they stay living under a logic that is not theirs nor represents them, but those who have a little dignity for themselves (and others), they will know that cases like the Narvarte one will only stop until the foundations of Mexican political class are devastated.

Justice Will NOT Come From the Guilty Ones

It is normally thought that demanding justice solves problems; that the resignation or layoff of a particular governor involves significant reduction in crimes or alternation in the political-ideological spectrum that will lead to achieve a “better Mexico”; this is absolutely false and idealistic! HOW TO ASK JUSTICE BY THE STATE WHEN ITS OWN NATURE IS UNFAIR?

The current view of political life is a fair margin between the society and the state, when in fact this is only a partial stance of social reality, since it is the conflict between two historical classes that perpetuates the fact that freedom, justice and peace are dictated by the power of the elite, and especially justice requires laws and “legal” schemes that precede what is “right” or “wrong” out of true human ethics. That is why, those who own and manage legal institutions have in their arms and just for them “justice” and “truth”.

The only way that life itself really has bases on Freedom and on the free development of the professions (such as dissident journalism) is with the complete elimination of all political mercenaries, bureaucrats and those who cover their integrity through the shields and weapons, but not with a new government that repeat these standards, but with the creation of autonomous practices and organizational forms coming from the people, enlarging the rift between “being governed” and “self-government”. In the standard frames of capitalist society, it is only fair to overthrow these stories of barbarity and murders, for the progressive and collective progress of individuals to be decided by them themselves, and not by others.

The contradiction in the proposals of many demonstrations is clear: JUSTICE CANNOT BE DEMANDED TO THE STATE, WHEN IT HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR A PRIVATIZING IT PRIVILEGING ONLY ONE CLASS THROUGHOUT HISTORY.

JUSTICE WILL BE TAKEN BY THE PEOPLE BY THE NECESSARY MEANS TO ABOLISH CAPITAL STATE!
